Low-income and vulnerable populations lack access to basic eye care – putting them at greater risk than the general population for undiagnosed vision disorders and eye diseases.
Gift of Sight, launched in 2008, provides sight-restoring surgeries to underserved individuals suffering from severe vision loss, primarily due to cataracts, who would not otherwise receive care.
All too often many share similar stories, underscoring the need for support. Life’s hardships have pushed routine vision care to the sidelines, overshadowed by immediate concerns like securing food and shelter, caring for children, managing chronic illnesses, and simply ensuring reliable transportation to reach work.
Most individuals experience a gradual decline in vision, making it difficult to drive to work, perform essential job duties, or even read food labels at home. When worsening conditions demand professional care, they often worry they cannot afford it. Yet, their hope remains to be prescribed a pair of glasses that might restore their vision and preserve their independence.
In many cases, often after years without access to proper healthcare, patients discover they are facing rapidly advancing cataracts in both eyes – an issue beyond the help of glasses and treatable only through surgery.
For those who receive the Gift of Sight, cataract surgery is almost invariably described as a miracle – bringing immediate impact to the clarity of their vision and overall quality of life. Many resigned themselves to the slow loss of sight, believing surgery was financially unattainable and that blindness was inevitable.
To date, 125 life-changing surgeries – providing over $750,000 in medical care – have not only restored sight but also renewed independence, revived livelihoods, and transformed quality of life.
To be considered, patients in need of sight-restoring surgery must be referred to LifeSight by an eye care professional and meet specific criteria. Both the referring eye care professional and patient complete applications that are submitted to LifeSight, and twice yearly, reviewed by a committee of medical professionals and community members.
Selections are made based on the severity of the diagnosis, impact on the patient’s life and work, urgency of the situation, overall visual prognosis, significance of financial need, and available funding.
Gift of Sight procedures are fully funded by LifeSight and performed at reduced Medicaid reimbursement rates, made possible through strong partnerships with eye care professionals and surgical centers. This vital work is supported in part by an alliance with Dakota Lions Sight & Health, alongside contributions from other generous donors.
